Tofurky vs. Veggie Turkey?

Thursday November 9, 2006
Many vegetarians and vegans are perfectly happy to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal without the turkey centerpiece, while others prefer to prepare a vegetarian mock turkey substitute. If you're wondering what a Tofurky is or need to know the difference between a Tofurky and a "Veggie Turkey", then this handy guide to vegetarian mock turkeys is for you.

Do you want a plastic wishbone? Do you prefer your veggie turkey with stuffing or without? This quick overview will help you decide which veggie turkey substitute, if any, you want to roast for the holidays.

Note: Unfortunately, Now and Zen brand Unturkey vegetarian turkey is no longer available.

I love Tofurky but the best Thanksgiving non-turkey I’ve had was made of millet. We lived in an artist commune of sorts and two of the sculptors made it a tradition to sculpt a turkey out of millet and some sort of vegan paste. It was beautiful and exact and was the most fun I had at Thanksgiving…needed a little gravy though and then it was perfect.

We’re having the Quorn Turk’y Roast this year. We’ve had the Tofurky twice and it was fairly good but a friend told me the roast is better so we’ll see! Happy Thanksgiving!
